Maltego requires Java Runtime Environment 1.6 from Oracle (previously Sun Microsystems). This is installed by default when using the Apple Software Update feature. Before you run Maltego, check that you have the latest JRE installed (or just ensure that you have recently upgraded your operating system: System Preferences -> Software Updates).
